Kybella before and after

A double chin is that roll of fatty flesh that sits below your chin and, in effect, makes you look like you have more than one chin, hence the name “double chin.” Unfortunately, as we age, our skin begins to sag, and if you have any excess fat around your face or throat, then it can sag and create the dreaded double chin look. Fortunately, though, you don’t have to settle for living with a double chin. Thanks to modern technology and all the innovations in the medical cosmetic industry, there are products out there that are designed to help you achieve the youthful, healthy appearance that you want.

One Way Is KYBELLA®

One way you can help address your issue of a double chin is with KYBELLA®. KYBELLA® is a prescription medicine that is injected into the offending skin to help decrease its appearance. The way that KYBELLA® works is actually pretty simple. The active ingredient in the serum is deoxycholic acid, and what it does is work to break down the excess dietary fat. When it’s injected into your submental chin fat, it destroys and absorbs the fat cells present there, which lends to you having a tighter, firmer look under your chin. What’s more is that once the treatment has been administered, the offending fat cells will no longer be able to accumulate or store fat, so you generally won’t have to repeat the treatment once you reach your desired look.

Is It Safe?

Of course, before you undergo any kind of procedure, you’ll want to know if it’s safe, and we don’t blame you. There’s no need to worry with KYBELLA®, though, because it is FDA-approved. In fact, it’s the only FDA-approved treatment for submental fat. Still, though, before getting KYBELLA® injections, you’ll have to undergo a consultation to see if you’re an appropriate candidate. When you go in to for your physical examination prior to receiving KYBELLA® treatments, make sure to inform the physician if you have any of the following:

  • An infection in the area to be treated
  • All the medications that you take, especially if you take a medication that prevents clotting of your blood
  • If you’ve ever had surgery on your face, neck or chin
  • If you’ve ever had cosmetic treatments done before on your face, neck or chin
  • If you have any medical conditions near the area to be treated
  • If you have or have had trouble swallowing
  • If you have bleeding problems
  • If you’re pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant
  • If you’re breastfeeding or plan on breastfeeding

Who Is a Good Candidate for KYBELLA®?

KYBELLA® is most appropriate for people who are bothered by their double chin and who feel like they make them look older or heavier than they are and want to change that. If you don’t want to undergo a cosmetic surgery, and you tend to eat well and exercise and yet your double chin still doesn’t go away, then KYBELLA® could be the perfect solution for you. It provides you with a non-invasive way to deal with your double chin issue without having to go under the knife or experience all the downtime that’s associated with cosmetic surgery.

How Is KYBELLA® Treatment Done?

So you’ve decided that you want to get KYBELLA® treatments done. What to expect? Well, first you’ll have to have your initial consultation with an approvied KYBELLA®-administering physician. You’ll tell the doctor what you want to achieve through KYBELLA® treatments, and the doctor will, in turn, let you know if your goals are feasible with the treatment. The doctor will also examine you and ask you appropriate questions about your medical history to determine whether or not you’re an ideal candidate for KYBELLA®.

Once it’s been determined that you are, a series of appointments will be set up for you. During each appointment, you’ll be given an injection of KYBELLA® in the offending area. Each treatment consists of multiple small injections, and the entire process takes anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

The exact number of injections you’ll need and how many times you’ll need to come back depends upon your specific case. Some people only have to go in for one appointment while others might need three or four. If you do have to undergo more than one treatment, it’s important to note that each treatment session will be scheduled at least one month apart. The reason for this is because it takes up to a month for the full results of KYBELLA® treatments to be realized in full. The most treatments you can expect to receive is six. Generally, physicians don’t administer more than six KYBELLA® treatments.

What’s the Recovery Time?

Part of what’s so great about KYBELLA® is that there’s minimal, if any, recovery associated with it. It’s not like when you undergo cosmetic surgery and have to take a few days or weeks off from work. With KYBELLA®, you might experience a bit of swelling, bruising or numbness under your chin, but it will generally go away in a few days.

Are There Any Side Effects?

The most common side effects associated with KYBELLA® are swelling, bruising, pain, redness, hardness and numbness around the chin area. However, in some rare cases, there are more serious side effects, including nerve injury in the jaw, trouble swallowing and injection site problems like hair loss, ulcers and tissue death. If you notice any kind of open sores or develop drainage issues after undergoing KYBELLA® treatment, you should contact your doctor immediately.

How Long Will the Results Last?

Another great thing about KYBELLA® is that the results are forever. Once KYBELLA® has been injected into the chin, it destroys the fat cells. Once they are destroyed, then they can no longer store the fat that causes your appearance to look less than satisfactory. Therefore, once you undergo your KYBELLA® treatments, you generally aren’t expected to have to have any more.

How Much Does KYBELLA® Treatment Cost?

The cost for KYBELLA® treatments depends on many factors because not only do you have to pay for the price of the product (which is different in different areas due to availability and transportation costs), you’ll also pay the physician depending upon his or her rates. The skill and expertise level of the physician will affect the price. When you’re looking for a KYBELLA®-administering physician, make sure to look for one who’s licensed, trained and has experience treating patients with KYBELLA® for best results.
